The advancement in gerontology is an essential discipline that makes us see that there are factors of celular deterioration caused by the passing of time that are added to the etiology of almost all pathologies.

The study of gerontology leads us to knowledge and respect for life and nature, and to avoid pathologies of which we do not know the etiology or treatment.

The application of knowledge in this field is not only carried out with the intention of prolonging our existence, but also to maintain a higher quality of life within a harmonious physical and mental balance.

Knowledge in this discipline is essential due to the fact that in 2006 in Mexico, according to statistics from the Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores (INAPAM), there exists 7.3 million people over the age of 60, which represent 7.6% of the total population.

According to the INEGI, 6% of the population of Queretaro (83,574 people) are over 60 and the probable increase of this age group on a national level is calculated to be around 15 million for 2015 and 42 million for 2050.

The school is an organisation that aims to attend to the intelectual growth necessities of adults that interrupted their academic formation or didn't have the opportunity to commence it.

There is no age limit to acquire this knowledge and apply it, as a human being should have opportunities to fully develop their capacities, the satisfaction of their needs and accomplishment of their aspirations at any stage of their life.

Gerontology and Biogerontology Today

Gerontology is the science that studies aging in its biological, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions. Today, it takes an interdisciplinary and person-centered approach, promoting active and healthy aging with quality of life and social participation. Scholars such as Robert Butler, who coined the term ageism, and Laura Carstensen, creator of the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, have played a key role in developing more positive and inclusive views of aging.

Biogerontology, the biological branch of gerontology, focuses on the molecular and celular mechanisms of aging. It explores phenomena such as oxidative stress, chronic low-grade inflammation (inflammaging), telomere shortening, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular senescence. Leading researchers such as Judith Campisi, David Sinclair, and Aubrey de Grey have proposed strategies to delay biological aging and prevent agerelated diseases.

In the face of global population aging, both gerontology and biogerontology offer scientific, ethical, and human-centered tools to address 21st-century challenges in healthcare, public policy, and comprehensive elder care.
